Holiday Party fun!

After enjoying a popcorn treat the students made snow-people, completed a candy cane challenge, decorated snow globes, drawing snowman on a paper plate while it's on their head and ended with an ornament toss.  Great party! Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible.

A little STEM thinking to get us going!

Students were given a piece of yarn, a long strip of tape, a coffee filter and Dixie cup.  Their job is to create a device that will keep 3 snap cubes safe when dropped from a height of about 7 feet.  Which design will meet the challenge?

Happy Veteran's Day

Today we celebrate our Veterans!  Thank you to all who have served our country.  We appreciate you! Our key note speaker was the older brother of Mrs. Mach, and currently serving in the Navy.  This was a cool experience because he needed to Skype in!  Below are some pictures from the assembly.

Arrays

Did you know an array is made of rows and columns?

This crate has 4 rows of 8. Can you see the array?  Rows go from left to right like shelves on a bookcase.  Columns stand tall like trees or pillars.  Can you find arrays at your house or in your neighborhood?

First stop is to listen to author and illustrator Dan KilÅ‚een.  Dan is a local writer who includes St. Louis in  his books!   The students were able to view his newest book!  Derrick and the Dinosaurs We also learned about how practice is important to become the best author and illustrator possible.

Stop number 2- Learning about the St. Louis County Library Summer Reading program.

Stop number 3- Pick a book
Each student selected a book of choice to take home.  Who awesome is that!?

Stop number 4- Illustrator Jeff Wiegel
While here the students learned a little about how an illustration needs to match the words.  Together the students helped create the main character, Austin, as a superhero.  They were given background info about the character and then the students told the illustrator how the character should look.  He will be cleaning up then true and sending it to us here at Long!

Stop number 5-  We finished our day by enjoying the books published by all of the classrooms at Long.  The books will be barcoded and should be available for checkout from our school library next year!
