Special guest...

Today second grade had the opportunity to enjoy a story and sing along with Mr. Mr. Jobst.  This is Mr. Jobst's father.  He always does a great job bring the holiday feeling to life.

Let's Synergize!

Today we did some problem solving in groups to Synergize our ideas!  Students were posed with the task of building the tallest tower as a team.  They had 3 minutes to create a plan on how to build their tower using only 20 bendable straws, 2 post-its and about a yard of masking tape.  Each group created a plan before receiving their supplies.  After developing a plan, teams had 8 minutes to build!  Such creative design ideas were used.  Each team had a different approach.  Below are some pictures of the process and final products.  The most important part was the tower had to stand up without human assistance.

Team 3: Michael, Evelyn, Sydney, Xavier

Team 4: Cole, MaryJane, Paige, Braden, Emilia

Team 5: Andrew, Brooke, Emma

Team 1: Allie, Sara, Nate, Michael

Team 2: Karter, Eve, Emily, Shea

Almost 30 inches! Straight and tall

The goal post fell over, measuring just over 6 inches, but a very creative base was constructed.

About 15 inches, but did you see the structure of the base.  Very structurally sound build.

Unfortunately, you can't view the innovative design used in this team.  After time was called, one straw was bumped and the tower slowly crumbled over.

Around 20 inches tall.  Notice the triangular bases used to stabilize the 2 main straws!?

All of the designs were innovative and creative.  The students really jumped into this challenge.  The groups depended on one another to plan and execute in a time frame.  Great job, Long Leaders of room 18!

A little about our week

This week the students worked on their reading stamina.  They are rock in' it!  I'm so proud of our class.

They also used their bodies to practice their spelling words!

Earlier in the week we learned how leadership is important to be successful.  Students had to work together to untwist into a straight line.

Starting next week, be on the lookout for the first blog entry by our Blog Writing Leaders, Eve and Braden!  They will be keeping you up to date on the events taking place each week for the first semester.

Enjoy your weekend and sharpen the saw.

Crestwood Arbor Day Tree Planting 2015

Today my class was invited for the 11th year to assist the Crestwood Parks department plant two trees in honor of Arbor Day.  Today's trees were a Red Bud and a Cherry Tree.  The students were able to add soil around the root ball, then mulch and finally water.  The trees are just off from the playground.  Below are some pictures from our visit.  When talking with Brian, from the park's department, we figured out that students from Long Elementary have been planting trees in Crestwood Park in honor Arbor day for around 20 years!  How amazing is that!  Thank you to the park's department for the yearly invitation.  We look forward to many more trees in the years to come.
