Ice cream social 2014

What a great turn out tonight for Ice Cream Social/Meet the Teacher!  It was wonderful getting to see all of my new 2nd graders and their families.  I also enjoyed seeing some previous students as well.  Remember our room is always open for previous friends to stop in and say hi!  I look forward to a terrific year and I'll see you for the first day of school on Thursday!

Summer Fun

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer break from school!  Before you know it, we will be reuniting at Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, August 12, 2014.  It is amazing how quickly time speeds by.  I am still working on making the final changes to the class movie we filmed at the end of the year.  I am confident it will be completed and ready to share if my new students the first week of school.

Field Day 2014

Today the weather was perfect for our 2nd annual Field Day!  The kids had a blast, as did the adults.   Thank you to all of the volunteers.   Without you, today couldn't happen.

The class had a great cheer to pump them up for the second half of the day.

Gold and green
Those are our colors.

Earth/Science Day 2014

Today the students explored a variety of science ideas! We began our day observing items under the digital microscopes.  There were discussions of how pencil lead looks on paper when displayed and how leaves and cells look.  Then they learned about garbage with Bill Nye the Science Guy!  Our third event was with Kinetic Kevin from Mad Science.  He does so many amazing experiments and our class had front row access! After lunch we will enjoy a snack and write "take always" from the morning's events.  Our art activity with Mrs. Heller is about slogans about Earth day.    The we headed to the outdoor learning  space to listen to a speaker from Gateway Greenie to learn about how to plant seeds, especially those you can eat and enjoy!   And finally our day ended in the library learning about bees! The children each have a small printout of some native bees to Missouri.  We had an amazing day and I'm so glad the students were able to enjoy the day!

Arbor Day 2014

Pictures of our Arbor Day tree planting with the Crestwood Parks Department!

Shadows

Today, on this gorgeous sunny day, we went outside to trace our shadows.  Students traced their shadows 3times to see how time of day effects length and direction of shadows.  Our first trace occurred at 10:30, the second was at 12:00 and the final trace was completed at 1:15.  The students noticed their shadows get shorter in length with each tracing.   Below are a few of the tracing for you to view.  If you have time, before the rain comes in, view our shadows in the new portion of the parking lot!

Author visit

Another wonderful opportunity to meet Debra Frasier on Thursday, April 3!  To make this day even more special, it is her birthday!  She did an amazing job including the students into her presentation.

Big Nate Author visit

Today the students had the amazing opportunity to meet, Lincoln Pierce, the author of the Big Nate series.  What a wonderful experience for the students to learn from a published author!  Mr. Pierce talked about the importance of writing and reading.   The students were also told what he did over the years to help him become a better illustrator and author.  The need to share your work with other to receive feedback was also expressed.  If our work is kept to ourself, it can be difficult to get better.

Ask your child what is unique about the Big Nate series in Germany.  This was shared during the presentation.  Fun, Big Nate trivia.
