Thanksgiving fun

Believe it or not, even third graders take time to cut, paste and be creative! The students created turkeys by tracing their foot for the body.  The feathers are labeled with "I am thankful..." statements and words related to Thanksgivings.

Ability Awareness day

Today the students had the opportunity to learn about CHAMP service dogs.  Here are a few pictures from that rotation this morning.  Our speaker was Dianne and her name is Calgary.

Our second location was with Paraquad learning about deaf people.  Our speaker, Colleen, learned to sign at age six.

Jinnerfer and her guide dog, Maggie, were our final speaker. In this rotation the students learned about being blind and using a quite dog to get around safely.

What a great experience for the students!  Ask your child to tell you more about each speaker and learning experience.

Leaves are Amazing!

This week in science we are learning about the importance of leaves to plants.  They are needed to produce the plants food through photosynthesis, control water levels in the plant and in some instances protect the plant from being eaten.  The students brought in leaves from home and we did "rubbings" of them in the students' science journals.  We also had the amazing opportunity to look at some of the leaves up close and personal, through the use of a digital microscope connected to my laptop.  Here are just a few of the images we were able to capture.

Fabulous Friday!

The students have been working very hard this week.  Our day is slowing looking more "normal" and the day goes by too fast!  Today we worked on setting 3 goals.  One for Home, one for School and one for Life.  The goals were displayed on posters that outline their hand and arm to form 3 trees.  The are beautifully displayed in our hallway.  Ask your child to share the goals they have set with you.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Curriculum Night is complete

Thank you to all who were able to attend.  I think the night went very well.  There was a lot of information to share and I hope I was clear on my expectations and policies.  If at any time during the school year you have questions, problems, concerns, do not hesitate to let me know and I will do my best to provide you the answer.  If at any time I am unable to answer your question I will either direct you to the needed contact person and do some searching until the answer is discovered.

Thank you again for taking the time to attend.  If you were unable to attend, notices will be coming home with your child tomorrow.  If, after looking through the material, you have questions you would like to have clarified, please let me know.

The school year is off to a wonderful start and I am enjoying working with your children every day and watching them learn.

Have a wonderful evening!

Meet the Teacher/ Ice Cream Social UPDATE

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer break!  Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, August 13 at 7:00 pm to stop by school for some Ice Cream, to meet your teacher and drop off school supplies.

Students entering Room 18... Welcome!  Please make sure that your supplies are labeled with your name or initials.  This includes every single pencil.  I know that might sound like an unnecessary task, but it helps everyone keep track of their individual pencils, and the students go through fewer during the year.

Continue to enjoy the rest of your summer and I can't wait to hear your stories when we get together in August!

Crestwood Park- Arbor Day Celebration!

Today our class was able to help two members of the Crestwood Parks department plant trees on the Crestwood Park grounds!  The trees are located on the edge of the walking trail near the upper parking lot.  You will see 3 trees in a row, ours are the first and last.  The first tree is a Robinson Crabtree and the last one is a Plum tree.   When you have time, please ask your child about the experience and maybe even take a visit to the park to view their work in person.  This event is an annual Arbor Day celebration the students in my room have the honor of participating in each year.  Keep an eye out on the Crestwood Parks' department website to see if new pictures are added.  I will try to post some pictures on the Moodle as well.

Here is a link to the site and a picture from last year.

MAP prep and testing

All year the students have been working very hard to learn and master skills.  This year will be the first year they will be participating in MAP testing.  MAP is the Missouri Assessment Program that is completed by students throughout the state between April 1 and May 17.

We will be continuing to work hard to prepare the students for this upcoming test.  They will be prepared come April to demonstrate just how wonderful each student at Long School, and especially those in Room 18, are.  In our building the students in third grade will be tested in 2 subject areas: Communication Arts and Math.  Students will complete the Communication Arts portions of the test on Wednesday, April 17- Monday, April 22.  They will then complete the Math portions on Tuesday, April 23-Thursday, April 25.

Testing will be done throughout the building for 3 weeks total due to varied testing schedules and number of test given in each grade level.  Since testing will occur during the hours of 9:00- 11:00 AM, there will be an adjustment made to lunch and block schedules for the testing window.  More information will be sent home regarding that once it becomes available.

If you are curious about MAP and want to learn more, please visit DESE's website at http://dese.mo.gov/divimprove/assess/
